Steve Lukather had already started his first song before we realised there was no warning
or alarm system, saying that the show will commence in 5 minutes, as there were hundreds of PPL
Still caught unawares about the conflicting time starts that were advertised also.
This panic to get to everyone’s seat spoiled the start of the show for mine, as i was interrupted
to move 3 times during Steve’s set, and would you believe the fourth time an attendant interrupted
my focus, to tell Liz and I that we were sitting in the wrong seats, this wasn’t our fault, but the previous
assistant who placed us there, I was so jack of it all, I moved and listened to his last song down on the floor level near the exit.
I have to say the Sound balances were all over the ship, Drums were way too loud and Muddy, I couldn’t
hear Lukather’s voice, or any subtlety and or clarity to any instrument in particular. It must have been
sounding weird on stage too, as Steve kept on asking for some more Mid’s through his side –fill monitors
after a song or two, this was a shame for a Legend of guitar and of course the band Toto, and a guitarist
that had written some classic songs and melodies with David Pach, and also played many studio albums
with the likes of ROGER WATERS on Amused to Death, and some of BOZ SCAGG’S Biggest selling albums.
STEVE VAI, came on next and blew the roof off with Instrumentals that had awesome & Beautiful melodies and Guitar work
and riffs that were out of this world. What a Magician of his instrument, i haven’t heard such innovative sounds
on a guitar in my long musical life, so this part of the show really swung my mood right around to jaw-dropping consequences.
It’s hard to believe that once an under-study of JOE SATRIANI , Steve Vai, has taken his playing to the next hemispheric dimensions.
I have a feeling JOHN POLI who has always been a strong advocate of the Guitar Virtuoso, would have been dribbling in amazement
as much as me. The Guitar Legend had an awesome stage-and front man’s presence and a funny and interactive personality that involved
everyone in his awesome set. The blue flashing L E D Lights on his fret-board were just a part of Steve being the ultimate showman and as
he said : ‘’ You know i have always been a bit of a Ham ‘’ …lol . as he spun his guitar around on a 360 degree angle and showed his flashing lights.
JOE SATRIANI was the cream on top of the pudding that was to take the audience to an even higher level of euphoria after Steve Vai’s amazing set.
He opened with one of my favourite instrumentals called : ‘’Flying in a Blue Dream’’……..Fu-king Amazing melody and Guitar solo and feel.
I also think that Mick Stoychevski would have seen that there are other Amazing guitarists in the world apart from Michael Schenker,
Lizzy mentioned to me after the first couple of Song’s that ‘’Stoy would have loved this part of the show.’’
Conis, Sotir and Poli also would have been amazed at the tight sounding band of Musician’s along with Lighting that could have
been from a Space-ship from Close Encounters of the Third kind. Two giant spot lights were on Joe with his cool look of a shiny baldy
head with dark sun-glasses on and a guitar-feel that came from with-in and was complemented by so many different colours above the band
This was truly the climax of the G3 Concert for me, particularly when he then did an Amazing duelling musical piece with the keyboardist,
and this was followed by three songs from Surfing with the Alien, including his biggest Australian and world-wide hit ‘’ always with me, always with you.’’
A night that truly harnessed my belief that music isn’t just about the Topic-Subject or LYRICS, but when played by a Virtuoso musician,
it’s all about The Melody, the FEEL and the Journey that those amazing Ingredients can take you on.
