What to expect on Black Routes this week (9 June 2012 4-6 pm) …
Notes Newtown is our favourite venue and we hope to get to a couple of gigs there this week. Tomorrow Sunday (10 June 2012) Matt Morrison launches Gemini, his great debut CD, with assistance from The Hiptones vocalist Snooks La Vie, among others. We’ll play tracks from Gemini, and from The Hiptones’ Right Now. One of those “others” is Clayton Doley, who returns to Notes on Tuesday (12 June 2012) to play keys for Harry Manx and Yeshe Reiners. We’ll play tracks from Harry’s recent retrospective, Isle Of Manx, and a great version of Summertime – featuring Harry – from Yeshe’s recent Roots & Wings (listen up for the I Shot the Sheriff riff).
Also tomorrow Sunday (10 June 2012), just around the corner from Notes – almost – legendary Melbourne songwriter Peter Lillie holds court at The Sandown (upstairs). We’ll play a few tracks from two recent compilations of Peter’s quirky work.
We’re not quite sure what to think of Graveyard Train, but they’re launching their CD, Hollow, at The Metro on Friday (15 June 2012), so one track – or two if time – to give you a taste.
Saturday next (16 June 2012) sees The Jed Rowe Band launching their Jeff Lang-produced The Ember and the Afterglow at The Empire, Annandale, so we’ll play one track from that and one from support Dan Hopkins‘ Golden Girl, then more from both next week. We expect to have Dan as special guest in the studio next week for a chat and to play some tunes: watch this space!
For the nominal Queen’s Birthday, a new Birthday Blues from Tail Dragger and Bob Corritore‘s newie, Longtime Friends In the Blues, along with a very special song from Flap! that honours a very special Princess dear to the hearts of most Australians.
Expect also to hear more from Nicky Bomba’s Bustamento (they’re playing at Darling Harbour on the holiday Monday), Lily Dior, Lil’ Band O’ Gold, and Catherine Russell. We’ll also play the original 1960 recording of I’m Shakin’, a Rudy Toombs song Jack White covered on his recent solo debut, Blunderbuss!
And finally we’ll present a birthday tribute to Nehemiah Curtis ‘Skip’ James (9 June 1902 Bentonia MS – 3 October 1969 Philadelphia PA).
